Baird Farm is a 560-acre farm in the foothills of Vermont's Green Mountains in Chittenden, in the Baird family for four generations since 1918. Ralph and Sara Baird purchased the property that year and began by milking cows and making butter sold door-to-door in nearby Rutland. As the dairy herd grew, milk was sold to the Boston market and later to the local Cabot cheese plant. The milking cows were sold in 1996, and since that time maple syrup has been the farm's primary crop.
Today Bonnie and Robert Baird own and operate the farm while their daughter Jenna and her partner Jacob run the maple syrup retail business. They tap 14,000 maple trees on the property, producing organic maple syrup. The sales room attached to the sugarhouse offers free samples of all four grades of pure Vermont maple syrup plus three unique infused varieties. The farm is open year-round for visits and offers guided tours by appointment, seasonal maple events, and even a giant pumpkin display. Products include maple syrup, maple butter, maple candy, and cookbooks.
