About the Farm

In 1976, Jack and Anne Lazor arrived in Westfield, Vermont, ready to live their dream of self-sufficiency and land stewardship in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom. What began as a small homestead operation with homemade yogurt prepared on the kitchen stove and delivered door to door has blossomed into a thriving 400-acre farm that now supports 12-15 people and 76 Jersey cows. Starting as Vermont's original organic dairy, Butterworks Farm built its reputation on the buttery, protein-rich milk of their closed herd of Jersey cows, having not purchased a single cow since the 1970s.

For nearly five decades, the Lazors cultivated not just exceptional dairy products but a philosophy rooted in giving back more than they take. Their commitment to land stewardship through slow-aged composting, specialized perennial seeding, and careful soil management has created pastures rich in organic matter and abundant in carbon. The farm became renowned throughout New England for breeding decades of strength, vigor, and calm nature into their herd, with many former farm hands and upstart organic farmers starting their own operations with Butterworks cows. The farm's focus on optimal cow comfort and care, from rotationally grazed pastures to their cushy bedded pack solar barn, ensures these happy Jersey girls produce 30-40 pounds of exceptional quality milk daily.

In August 2024, Butterworks Farm entered an exciting new chapter with its acquisition by Anthony Calderaro, Ania Kuniej, and Joseph Calderaro, who share the founding vision of people, animals, and nature living in balance. The new owners continue the farm's commitment to 100% grass-fed organic dairy production, processing 4,000 to 5,000 quarts of milk weekly in their on-farm creamery located just upstairs from the cow barn. Today, their artisan yogurts, kefirs, buttermilk, and heavy cream are available throughout Vermont and most of the Northeast, carrying forward a 40-year legacy of sustainable farming practices and exceptional quality that customers can taste in every product.
