About the Farm

Colby Farm began operating in 1960 under the guidance of first-generation farmer William Colby, who dedicated his life to the land until his passing in late 2020. His legacy lives on through his son, J.R. Colby, and partner Elizabeth Knight, who now run the family operation with the same commitment to excellence that has defined the farm for over six decades. What started as a modest agricultural venture has grown into a beloved destination for those seeking the finest in local produce and farm goods.

Spanning 200 acres of fertile farmland in the Newbury area, Colby Farm operates with a thoughtful approach to agriculture. While most of their acreage is dedicated to hayfields suited to the clay soil, they cultivate approximately 20 acres of prime land for vegetables and herbs. This careful land management yields an impressive array of fresh produce that far surpasses what customers might find in supermarkets and warehouse stores. The farm's commitment to quality extends beyond their own crops, as they carefully source additional products from nearby small businesses and local farms rather than national manufacturers.

The heart of Colby Farm lies in its mission to provide families with safe, local food while maintaining a deep respect for the ecology of their area and the environment as a whole. Located conveniently in Newbury's historic Common Pasture, just outside Newburyport on Scotland Road, the farm expanded its farmstand in 2012 to better serve the community. Despite the growth and modern conveniences, Colby Farm remains the same honest, friendly, family-run business it has been since 1960, where spending 16 hours a day farming translates into unmatched knowledge about food and an unwavering dedication to their customers.
