Cooper's Hilltop Farm has deep roots stretching back to 1875, when James and Mary Ann Cooper moved from England to Massachusetts with their five children. The family's agricultural journey truly began in the early 1900s when their oldest son James Arnold purchased the first parts of the farm's land on Henshaw Street. In 1905 he married Cora Raymond, and by 1915 they had built a home on the farmland for their growing family of five. Soon after, they planted the farm with apple, pear, plum and peach trees, some of which remain on the property today.
The farm expanded under the stewardship of Harold Cooper, who started delivering milk and fruit on his way to school before leaving after eighth grade to expand the delivery routes across town. During the 1930s, recognizing the proven health benefits of pasteurization, Harold built a processing room on the farm. When he married Hazel in 1940, she became an essential part of the business, even helping to process milk during World War 2. As milk routes gave way to the convenience of supermarkets in the late 1950s, the farm adapted by transitioning to direct sales, eventually moving their store to the current location on Henshaw Street.
Today, the farm is run by Hazel and Harold's son Richard, continuing four generations of farming on the hilltop. The operation covers approximately 230 acres comprising a mix of grazing pasture, corn, rye and hay fields, as well as woodlands, with livestock including dairy cows, beef cows and an assortment of farmyard friends. While primarily known as a dairy farm for many years, Cooper's Hilltop Farm has evolved into a comprehensive farm store operation, committed to producing and sourcing local products that families in the community can enjoy, staying true to their motto of serving "from our family to yours since 1918."
