About the Farm

Nestled among forest, field, and ponds in the rolling Litchfield Hills, Evergreen Berry Farm in Watertown, Connecticut is a living testament to the power of persistence, stewardship, and family legacy. Established in 1979 by Bob and Cathee Alex, the farm began as a vision rooted in childhood memories and a passion for the land. The original 27-acre parcel—once an untended mix of cornfield and wetlands—was lovingly transformed over decades into a biologically managed haven for fruit, flowers, and pollinators.

The farm initially blossomed as a thriving blueberry operation, with over 7,000 bushes meticulously planted and nurtured through the 1980s and beyond. But Evergreen’s evolution is also a story of adaptability. When conventional farming methods proved unsustainable, Bob made the courageous shift in 2012 to fully organic and biological practices—eschewing synthetic inputs in favor of compost tea, fish hydrosylate, hand-weeding, and soil revitalization techniques. This transition renewed not only the health of the land but the farm's spirit. Over the years, Evergreen expanded to include blackberries, elderberries, and raspberries, and ultimately restructured as an LLC with an eye toward multi-generational succession.

Today, as weather patterns shift and crops face new challenges, Evergreen has entered its next chapter. In 2024, after 45 years of blueberry cultivation, Bob and Cathee retired the berries that once defined the farm. In their place, a sweeping wildflower meadow now flourishes, serving as a sanctuary for native bees, butterflies, and birds. Black raspberries remain the farm's seasonal treasure, grown in deeper, more resilient soils. With each visitor who picks a berry or a bouquet, the legacy of love, resilience, and stewardship continues. Evergreen Berry Farm stands not just as a place of harvest, but as a living narrative of how to care for the earth—and one another.
