About the Farm

Flatlander Farm was born in the spring of 2013 in Pawlet, Vermont, from the dreams of Keith and Lisa, who met over an evening of open mic bluegrass and discovered their shared vision of having their own farmstead. Keith, a flatlander from the suburbs of Albany, New York, and Lisa, who grew up in Addison County hearing about flatlanders throughout her childhood, chose their farm's name as a bridge between old and new. After Keith was living off-grid and Lisa returned from time spent in Southeast Asia, their relationship blossomed into something special that would shape their future on the land.

As first generation farmers, Keith and Lisa have moved their operation across Vermont's hills, from Pawlet to Monkton where the animals grazed the land Lisa grew up on, and finally to their permanent home in Starksboro in late fall 2015. They now steward the land alongside their twin babies, born in 2020, believing in the power of bridging tradition with innovation by rooting their farm in Vermont's livestock grazing heritage while bringing their off-farm experiences in healthcare and local food hubs to their growing business.

Flatlander Farm's mission centers on raising animals as nature intended through holistic farming practices and managed rotational grazing of small groups of chickens, ducks, geese, and goats. Their grazing practices stem from a deep commitment to healthy animals, diverse pasture systems, and clean watersheds, believing that rotational grazing provides animals access to the most nutritious feed while their movement across the land regenerates soil and increases fertility. The farm also honors the memory of their daughter Josephine through Josie's Patch, started in 2018, which grows pumpkins to raise money for purchasing winter gear for children in need at the local elementary school, embodying their belief in cultivating community and welcoming all to grow a sustainable and regenerative future together.
