Maple Syrup

About the Farm

The story of Goodwin Family Maple begins in 1973 when thirteen-year-old Jeff Goodwin was given the opportunity to operate a modest 90-bucket maple operation. For four years, he contentedly produced 20 to 25 gallons of syrup annually, learning the fundamentals of this time-honored Vermont tradition. In 1977, he embraced innovation by replacing his buckets with maple tubing and expanding to 400 taps, yielding nearly 100 gallons of syrup that first year and filling the seventeen-year-old with a sense of accomplishment that felt like conquering the world.

The operation took on deeper family roots in 1992 when Jeff's parents began sugaring on their own property with 175 taps. His mother brought her own childhood memories of working in the sugar house with her father, rekindling a generational connection to the craft. The pivotal moment came in 1997 when Jeff had the chance to expand to over 1000 taps. Through family discussions, they decided to join forces, and Goodwin Family Maple was officially born. Together, they invested in new equipment and tubing, establishing 1300 taps and producing 300 to 350 gallons of syrup annually.

As their reputation grew and retail demand exceeded production, another expansion became necessary by 2009. Jeff's father, at age 73, decided to step aside and pass the torch to Jeff and his son Nathan, bringing the operation to its next level. The duo expanded to 3000 taps, and in 2010 they produced 900 gallons of syrup, ensuring abundant supply for their growing customer base. Today, Goodwin Family Maple represents a thriving Northern Vermont operation where up to three generations of Goodwins can be found working together in the sugar house, with family remaining at the heart of everything they do.
