Grant Family Farm is owned and led by Chris Grant, whose agricultural journey began at the remarkable age of 14 when he started selling vegetables and pumpkins from a roadside stand. His entrepreneurial spirit flourished early, and by 16, he had established Grant's Plants, a small perennial business that supplied groundcovers to landscapers and garden centers across the North Shore of Massachusetts. Chris pursued his passion through formal education, graduating from Essex Agricultural & Technical High School in 2008, earning an Associate's Degree in Fruit & Vegetable Production from the Stockbridge School of Agriculture in 2010, and completing a Bachelor's Degree in Plant, Soil, & Insect Science with a business concentration from The University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2012.
In 2011, Chris expanded into vegetable production and began selling at the Salem Farmers Market every Thursday, where he discovered his love for the social connections and community bonds that farmers markets foster. It was at these markets that he met many of his closest friends and his partner Alice, who would eventually become his business partner as well. The farm truly embodies its name as a family endeavor, supported by a dedicated team including Alice, Michelle Grant (Chris's mother) who tends the chickens, Aunt Diane who helps at farmers markets, Memmer (grandma) who makes occasional appearances, and Warren (Chris's brother) who serves as the lead mechanic.
In 2019, Grant Family Farm found its permanent home through a remarkable convergence of persistence, luck, and community support. With assistance from the Essex County Greenbelt Land Trust and Town of West Newbury Community Preservation Act funds, Chris purchased and conserved 10 acres of iconic farmland known as Brown Spring Farm. This beloved location on Route 113 in West Newbury has served as a central destination for fresh produce and cut flowers for over 140 years. Through Chris and Greenbelt's careful planning, the land has been placed under an Agricultural Preservation Restriction, ensuring it will remain a working farm forever. Today, Grant Family Farm operates as a small, diversified operation on the North Shore of Massachusetts, where they put their heart and soul into growing the finest vegetables, herbs, and cut flowers using thoughtful, ecologically conscious practices.
