Nestled in the heart of Groton, Massachusetts, Groton Center Farms occupies a storied 80-acre parcel known as Half Moon Meadow, situated on the westerly side of Gibbet Hill. The land's agricultural heritage stretches back centuries, beginning in 1684 when Jonas Prescott purchased meadows from Jonathan Lawrence for 1 pound 10 shillings. Through the hands of various farmers and landowners, including Joseph Hall in the 1800s and Major General William A. Bancroft in 1897, the property eventually operated as Gibbet Hill Farm dairy operation from 1947 to 1952 before passing through the Danielson family and then to Steven and Nancy Webber.
In 2001, Daniel McElroy acquired the Half Moon Meadow parcel and established Groton Center Farms as a family-owned operation dedicated to sustainable agriculture. The farm embraces traditional farming methods while incorporating modern technology, such as state-of-the-art Brinsea laboratory incubators for hatching chicks. McElroy's commitment to animal welfare is evident in his approach to raising free-range chickens, sheep, goats, and cows, all fed only the highest quality food without the stress of industrial farming practices.
Today, Groton Center Farms operates as a diverse agricultural enterprise that produces everything from fresh eggs and seasonal vegetables to pure honey and orchard fruits. The farm maintains 25 honeybee colonies that produce over 1,000 pounds of honey annually, collecting nectar from apple, peach, and blueberry blossoms as well as acres of clover and wildflowers. With their farm stand located on Mayfield Road, the McElroy family continues the land's agricultural legacy, providing the community with farm-fresh products while maintaining the natural beauty and productivity of this historic New England farmland.
