Halas Farm Market is a living tribute to four generations of Connecticut farming, a story that began nearly a century ago in 1925. Founded by Czechoslovakian immigrant Joseph Halas Sr., the original family enterprise was a self-sufficient dairy farm nestled on Bear Mountain Road in Danbury. With 30 cows, the Halases produced milk, cream, eggs, and other dairy goods for their community. Through the trials of war and loss, the Halas family’s strength and devotion to their land and one another never wavered. Joseph’s son, Paul Halas Sr., returned from WWII to carry on the legacy, eventually founding the Pembroke Road farm market in 1969 alongside his sister “Aunt Peggy.”
The modern Halas Farm Market now flourishes under the care of Michael Halas, the youngest of Paul’s ten children. With a degree in mechanical engineering and a deep love for the land instilled from childhood, Michael reimagined the family farm with an eye toward sustainability. He introduced ecologically responsible practices and constructed a state-of-the-art greenhouse that remains the heart of the business today. Though not organically certified, the farm is committed to safe, chemical-free growing practices, and its fields yield an extraordinary variety of vibrant, nutrient-rich produce.
From the charm of an 18th-century horse barn to the bustling seasonal rhythms of their CSA program, Halas Farm Market is more than a business—it is a legacy of resilience, family, and stewardship. Michael now resides in the restored 250-year-old home beside the market with his wife and three children, the fourth generation of Halases to rise with the sun and tend to the land. Visitors to the farm are welcomed not only by the bounty of fresh vegetables, fruits, eggs, and herbs but by the warm, enduring spirit of a farm that has weathered generations with grace and pride.
