About the Farm

Joe's Brook Farm began as an unexpected love story when Eric and Mary connected over board games and creative writing in college, never imagining they would soon build a farm together. Eric brought his Colorado roots to Mary's tiny hometown of Barnet in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom, and though they explored other places and occupations, something kept drawing them back to the welcoming Vermont landscape and the celebration of growing food. When a beaten up farmhouse on Joe's Brook Road came on the market, they found their calling along with their roots.

Starting in 2009 with a small tomato greenhouse and an oversized garden along the banks of Joe's Brook, the Skovsted family has grown their operation into a certified organic farm spanning 15 acres across two locations. The farm earned organic certification in 2012 and expanded in 2013 to prime agricultural land along the Passumpsic River, where rows of colorful peppers, garlic, strawberries, cucumbers and much more can be seen from Route 5 in Barnet. Today they cultivate 8 acres of vegetables, 3 acres of strawberries, and 6 acres of cover crops, growing over 130 varieties of vegetables, herbs, and berries.

Joe's Brook Farm operates as a true family and community endeavor, with the entire Skovsted family getting their hands in the dirt, including daughters Anna and Harriet and grandmother Marcelle. Their dedicated team includes year-round employees and three seasonal H2A workers from Jamaica who join for the busiest five months of the season. The farm serves the greater Northeast Kingdom and White Mountain regions through their CSA program, farmers markets, farm stand, and partnerships with local grocery stores and restaurants, putting fresh organic vegetables on the tables of schools, hospitals, restaurants, and homes throughout their community.
