Little Hogback Farm is a small diversified tree farm in Bristol, Vermont, run by Matt Davis and Caitlin Cusack. They started sugaring together with 40 buckets after reading the Nearings' Maple Sugar Book, though Matt was bitten by the sugaring bug at age 9 when he tapped his first tree and boiled syrup on the woodstove of his childhood home. Today they operate an 800-tap sugarbush nestled in the Green Mountains.
The farm is a proud participant in Audubon Vermont's Bird-Friendly Maple Project. A conservation biologist evaluated their woods and found an exceptionally diverse forest with 16 tree species, including uncommon black walnut, along with standing dead hemlocks that serve as homes for pileated woodpeckers and barred owls. In addition to pure maple syrup, they produce maple cream, maple candy, maple sugar in fine, coarse, and pearl varieties, and a bourbon barrel-aged maple syrup. All maple products are processed at the Mad River Food Hub in Waitsfield and are available at the Waitsfield Farmers Market, through their online store, and at the Middlebury Co-op. The farm also offers a cozy yurt rental near the Green Mountain National Forest.
