Manning Hill Farm is a diversified, sustainable working farm on 126 acres at the end of a scenic dirt road in the southwest corner of New Hampshire, with beautiful views of the Connecticut River Valley. The farm was purchased in 2005 by first-generation farmers Sarah Costa and Sam Canonica, who bought an 1874 farmhouse and the surrounding land with a vision to produce good quality milk. Sarah studied animal science at the University of New Hampshire, and Sam grew up working on farms near their native North Shore of Boston.
To set themselves apart, the couple chose to breed and milk the rarely seen heritage Dutch Belted dairy cow, a breed known for producing premium quality, naturally homogenized milk with a sweet, easily digestible flavor. With only about 200 registered in the United States, the breed also offered Sam and Sarah the opportunity to contribute to farm animal preservation. They gently pasteurize their milk in small batches at 145 degrees for 30 minutes in a converted stone garage that serves as a federally inspected processing facility, then bottle it on-site in reusable, earth-friendly glass bottles.
Beyond dairy, Manning Hill Farm raises all-natural, grass-fed beef, pasture-raised pork, and chicken, and offers eggs from pasture-raised hens. The farm store is open year-round and also sells maple syrup, honey, and soap. Their products can be found at the Farmers Market of Keene and select retail locations throughout the Monadnock region.
