About the Farm

Maple Crest Farm has deep roots in the Elwell family, stretching back over a century to 1917 when Albert Elwell and his family purchased the property and its historic 1729 farmhouse. Albert and his wife Edith walked their dairy cows from Essex, Massachusetts over several days to establish their new home. The farm flourished as a diverse operation through much of the 1900s, functioning as a cow and turkey farm complete with a chicken hatchery, pigs, sheep, horses, and all the fruits and vegetables the family needed.

The farm's landscape changed dramatically in the late 1970s when the City of Newburyport purchased about 80 acres to build the Indian Hill Reservoir, reducing Maple Crest from approximately 180 acres to its current 35 acres. This transition marked a new chapter as Albert's grandson John C. Elwell and his wife Carol, both retired educators, took over operations in the late 1990s with a clear mission. They planted their first Christmas trees and strawberries in 2002, the same year their first grandchild Aidan was born, symbolizing their commitment to keeping the farm in the family and the family on the farm.

Today, Maple Crest Farm operates as a multi-functional outdoor destination that serves families, photographers, and educational groups. The Elwells have expanded their crops to include Christmas trees, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, sunflowers, pumpkins, and gourds, while maintaining their commitment to sustainable farming practices. They rebuilt damaged fields using composted leaves from the local community and work to avoid chemical treatments. With the help of their 19-member family, including children, in-laws, and 10 grandchildren, plus a supportive community, they have created a space that hosts outdoor celebrations, educational experiences, and seasonal activities while supporting local environmental, education, and food security initiatives.
