The Newport Lobster Shack is a fishermen's cooperative located at State Pier 9 on Long Wharf in Newport, Rhode Island. The co-op was formed to give local fishermen the opportunity to grow their businesses by selling directly to the public. Each boat in the fleet is independently owned, and combined they catch lobster, crab, conch, and more off Aquidneck Island year-round. In 2009, the co-op built a shack where they began selling their catch directly to customers. In 2014, they opened a kitchen serving fried lobster bites, classic lobster rolls, and lobster cakes made from lobsters plucked by fishermen in local waters. By 2018, the shack had become an anchor on the waterfront and a destination for over 31,000 seafood lovers, purchasing some 125,000 pounds of seafood from participating fishermen. The market sells live seafood year-round and can pack it for travel or ship it overnight via FedEx anywhere in the continental U.S. Customers can also enjoy their food at picnic tables overlooking Newport Harbor.
