About the Farm

Oak & Ash Forest Farm sits nestled on a beautiful hilltop in Belchertown, Massachusetts, where Matthew and Lindsey Baird have spent over a decade transforming their shared dream into reality. The farm's name springs from Celtic zodiac tradition, where Matthew represents the oak tree and Lindsey the ash, creating a poetic foundation for their partnership. When they discovered their 7.5-acre property, dotted with wild blueberries, towering white pines, and hardwoods, they knew they had found their haven.

What sets Oak & Ash apart is their unwavering commitment to working with nature rather than against it. From the beginning, they rejected the conventional approach of clear-cutting land for farming, instead choosing to create a symbiotic relationship between forest and farm. Their philosophy centers on stewardship, viewing themselves as guardians of the land whose job is to conserve natural resources while demonstrating how to shape them into a functional, regenerative farm. They employ agroforestry, polyculture, permaculture, and no-dig gardening principles to create abundance without destruction.

Education forms the cornerstone of everything they do at Oak & Ash. Matthew brings his carpentry expertise and outdoor knowledge to land management and the farm's beautiful timber frame structures, while Lindsey, with her culinary and events background, manages the market garden and their certified Sourdough Kitchen. Together with their three daughters, they work to teach the next generation about sustainable farming, offering classes, workshops, and community outreach that share their methods and philosophy with others seeking to create mindful, regenerative food systems.
