About the Farm

Old Wild Farm carries forward a rich agricultural legacy that began in 1706, when an early settler of Haverhill, Massachusetts first carved a plot from the wilderness to build a home and raise crops and family. Through the centuries, many families have served as stewards of this land, carefully nurturing fields that were once former sandpits back to fertile productivity through decades of thoughtful management.

Today, Don Cox and Laura Scholten have joined this long chain of caretakers, bringing their own passion and expertise to continue the farming tradition. Don, the farm business owner and manager, grew up on a family farm in Oklahoma working with hay, cattle, and pecans while helping his grandmother in her garden. He moved to Haverhill in 2009 with the specific mission of keeping his family's farming legacy alive, and has been growing crops and honing his agricultural skills ever since.

Laura Scholten serves as farm manager, having discovered her calling for sustainable agriculture and homesteading as a teenager working on neighbors' backyard farms. Her commitment deepened through volunteering on her university's farm, studying environment and creative writing, and working on small organic farms across Costa Rica, Australia, and Norway. After moving to Haverhill in 2013 and marrying Don in 2014, she brought her dedication to animal care and wildlife conservation to the farm. Together, they strive to grow in harmony with nature, following sustainable agricultural practices while keeping the farm productive, improving fertility, and respecting the wild.
