Porter Family Farm begins with Josh Porter, who has been farming for practically his entire life. Growing up on multiple dairy farms, Josh made his first investment in livestock at the remarkable age of 11 when he purchased his first pair of oxen. Through middle school and high school, he continued to buy young stock, improve on them, and resell to grow his herd, graduating from Smith Vocational High School in 2001. His vast knowledge of animals and proper care developed from a lifetime of experience, teaching him that shortcuts don't work and quality meat requires investment in each animal throughout all stages of their lives.
Josh met his wife Anne while working at a horse farm in Easthampton, MA. Though not raised in farming like Josh, Anne began horseback riding lessons at age eight and her love for horses became central to her life decisions. She earned a bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education from Westfield State University and a Masters Degree in Education from Elms College, working as a classroom teacher for fifteen years in Springfield, Easthampton, and finally Williamsburg MA. The couple married in 2011 and welcomed three children: Sean in 2013 and twins Addison and Hayley in 2015.
The Porter family purchased their farm on Steady Lane in Ashfield on January 31, 2018. As the business grew, Anne stepped away from teaching in fall 2023 to take a more active role on the farm. This change led her back to the saddle and eventually to cattle sorting, inspiring Josh's idea to run their own events in 2024. The family now operates cattle sorting events, intro clinics, and summer practice nights while continuing their main focus of raising top grade beef cattle. All three children are active members on the farm, with Sean raising calves for local fair competition and the twins enjoying horseback riding and cattle sorting events.
