About the Farm

Rattle Root Farm is a small-scale agricultural operation situated on a leased, six-acre field in Princeton, Massachusetts, where they intensively farm one acre using beyond-organic practices. The farm was founded by Joey, Hannah, and Peter, who connected while Joey and Hannah were working on a farm in the Berkshires. Their shared passion for agriculture, elaborate cooking, and creating positive impact on local food systems inspired them to search for farmland throughout Massachusetts. Joey, who grew up in Princeton, discovered their current location through good fortune and the generous support of neighbors and the Princeton Land Trust.

The land carries deep historical significance, located on ancestral Nipmuc territory and later farmed by the Davis family in the 18th and 19th centuries, who built a cottage whose foundations remain visible today. In 1870, the property was sold to the Mirick family, who have thoughtfully maintained the land and supported the farming venture with a long-term lease. The farm's name derives from Black Cohosh, a medicinal plant native to eastern North America that once thrived throughout central Massachusetts but has become endangered due to habitat destruction.

Rattle Root Farm operates as a no-till, hand-scale operation growing beyond-organic vegetables, herbs, and flowers for their Community Supported Agriculture program, farm stand, and wholesale customers. Their farming philosophy centers on working with natural systems rather than against them, prioritizing soil health, biodiversity, and ecosystem balance. The farmers are committed to building relationships within their local community while working toward food equity, creating a space where customers feel empowered to engage with how their food is grown, and responsibly feeding their neighbors through sustainable agricultural practices.
