Richardson Farm is a five-generation family farm in Hartland, Vermont, dating to 1907 when dairy farmer James Johnson Richardson purchased the land. Today Gordon Richardson and his sons Scott and Reid manage the 450-acre property, which includes Garvin Hill, the highest point in Hartland. The farm maintains a herd of about 110 registered Jersey cattle -- 60 in the milking herd -- producing some of Vermont's highest-quality milk as proud members of the Agri-Mark cooperative that owns Cabot and Macadam cheese.
Their certified organic sugarbush has over 11,000 taps, producing 4,000 to 7,000 gallons of syrup per year using a wood-fired evaporator and a solar array that powers the entire operation. The farm was recognized as a Century Farm in 2008 and named Vermont Dairy Farm of the Year in 2009. They also manufacture handsome split rail fencing using cedar posts and white ash rails -- notably building the fence surrounding the Woodstock Farmers Market parking lot. Amy Richardson runs the farm's popular Instagram account with over 17,000 followers.
