Roots Farm is a certified-organic vegetable farm nestled in Tiverton, Rhode Island, where Mike and Kelli Roberts have cultivated both crops and community since 2009. The couple came to farming from engineering backgrounds, initially taking a year after graduate school to work on an organic farm with the simple goal of learning how to grow food. What began as educational exploration blossomed into passionate devotion, and they decided to start their own farm the following year. After balancing off-farm jobs to establish both their farm and their family, they successfully transitioned to full-time farming by 2014.
The farm's mission centers on growing the most nutrient-dense, fresh, and best-tasting crops for their community year-round, using no-till, regenerative, and human-scale farming methods with building healthy soil as their primary focus. Operating on a compact space of under 1.5 acres, they employ intensive farming techniques with six moveable high tunnels that allow them to optimize time and space both horizontally and vertically. This innovative approach enables them to support their family and five full-time employees while maintaining their commitment to soil health and sustainable practices.
The name "Roots Farm" carries special significance beyond their cultivation of root vegetables. It represents Kelli's return to her birthplace and childhood home in Tiverton, where the couple finally felt they were settling in and putting down their own metaphorical roots. Their dedication to year-round growing serves a dual purpose: providing fresh vegetables to their community during winter months while creating better work-life balance by spreading farming demands across all seasons rather than concentrating them in warmer months.
