Small Axe Farm is a hillside organic farm nestled in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, where the owners purchased their 45-acre property in 2002. What began as a homesteading venture, with the family building all their structures and home from scratch, gradually evolved into something more ambitious. Their gardens grew alongside their dreams, and by 2007 they began selling produce to their community, transitioning into a serious market farm operation by 2009.
The farm represents a commitment to sustainable agriculture that goes far beyond conventional practices. Operating as a no-till, off-grid operation powered entirely by solar energy, Small Axe Farm cultivates just one acre of their 45-acre property with meticulous care. Their south-facing hillside location at 1,500 feet elevation in zone 4 presents unique challenges, but the family has transformed these obstacles into advantages, using raised beds that run east to west across the slope to capture rainwater and prevent erosion while extending their growing season through natural solar collection.
At its heart, Small Axe Farm embodies a philosophy of regenerative stewardship and community nourishment. The family farms here first and foremost because it is their home, driven by a mission to improve the land while growing healthy organic produce for their community. Their son Huckle has operated his own rhubarb business as part of the farm since 2010, demonstrating how the next generation continues to build upon the foundation of sustainable agriculture and community connection that defines Small Axe Farm.
