Maple Syrup

About the Farm

Smart Mountain Sugarmakers LLC emerged from a deeply personal passion for maple sugaring that began in childhood. The founder started with six coffee cans to catch sap and a camp stove, producing just a pint of syrup in an afternoon. This humble beginning grew into a sophisticated operation that reflects decades of dedication to the craft that has sustained Vermont families through mud season for generations.

The farm's name carries profound meaning, originating from the founder's father who ran the operation during the dot-com boom years. Working without running water at the sugarhouse, he left a memorable note saying "I took up the water.com" and claimed that time spent in the woods made him smarter, leading him to call it Smart Mountain. Though he is no longer with them, his legacy lives on in an operation that has grown from 850 taps to an planned 2,100 taps, plus purchasing sap from another farm with 1,200 taps.

Today, Smart Mountain operates with a 30 square foot evaporator that burns 36-inch wood and produces 13 gallons of syrup per hour. The two-man team, supported by family during busy season, burned approximately six cords of wood to produce 1,500 gallons of syrup last year. As members of the Vermont Maple Sugar Makers Association, they maintain unwavering standards while embracing efficiency improvements like reverse osmosis technology, always prioritizing the most important element of all: flavor.
