About the Farm

Twisted Carrot Gardens was founded by Sean Maher, a first-generation farmer whose agricultural journey began in 2012 after writing his senior thesis on the state of America's food industry. He honed his craft in Boulder, Colorado, working under the mentorship of Peter Volz of Oxford Gardens and Bob Condon of Cottonwood Farms, alongside the influence of Brady Anderson. These formative experiences shaped his approach to sustainable farming and deepened his understanding of regenerative agricultural practices.

After four seasons in Colorado, Sean returned home to Massachusetts in 2016, starting a small market garden in his parents' backyard in Ashland. Those early years proved both humbling and influential as he ran a CSA program and personally delivered shares to customers. The operation later expanded to a location on the Ashland-Hopkinton line before finding its permanent home in Holliston. Today, Twisted Carrot Gardens serves around 50 local families through their CSA program and participates in weekly farmers markets.

This family-run farm has grown to include Sean's wife Samantha, whom he met at a farmers market in 2019. Samantha brought her passion for flowers to the operation, significantly enhancing the farm's biodiversity and pollinator population. The couple is supported by Sean's parents, Mike and Nancy, who assist with barn work, CSA pickups, and daily operations, as well as his aunt Patty, who volunteers regularly. Together, they practice regenerative agriculture without synthetic fertilizers or pesticides, focusing on soil health and minimal soil disturbance while maintaining a holistic approach that goes beyond organic certification standards.
