About the Farm

Up the Road Farm is a small-scale vegetable operation nestled in southeastern Vermont, where dedication to sustainable agriculture meets intimate farming practices. In their twelfth year of production, this intensively-managed farm operates on just one quarter of an acre along the Broad Brook in Guilford, conveniently positioned up the road from the farmers' house at the corner of Weatherhead Hollow Road and Guilford Center Road. Under the stewardship of Tadj Schreck and Nathanael Matthiesen, the farm has cultivated a reputation for producing sustainably grown vegetables with meticulous attention to environmental harmony.

The farm's philosophy extends far beyond conventional organic practices, embracing what they call "beyond organic" principles that prioritize long-term soil health and biodiversity enhancement. While not certified organic, Up the Road Farm commits to using organic fertilizers judiciously and limiting pesticide use whenever possible, with the ambitious goal of completely eliminating all pesticide applications. Their approach centers on cultivating strong plants in healthy soils that can naturally resist pests and diseases, reflecting a deep understanding of agricultural ecosystems and natural resilience.

Soil health serves as the cornerstone of their operation, with the farmers employing good compost, animal manures, and natural amendments like lime, greensand, and bone char to nurture their land. Their progressive approach includes working toward a no-tillage system designed to minimize erosion, reduce irrigation needs, and enhance soil biology health. Currently, they practice minimal tillage using a walk-behind rototiller and human-powered broadfork, demonstrating their commitment to gentle, sustainable land management that increases biodiversity rather than diminishing it.
