Vermont Farmstead Cheese Company began as a remarkable community effort to preserve a picturesque 18-acre dairy farm in South Woodstock, Vermont in 2009. Passionate residents rallied together, raising money to purchase the land, buildings and equipment in hopes that it would remain a working dairy farm. With generous contributions and tireless efforts from an entire community, their dream was realized and Vermont Farmstead became the first community-owned artisan cheese and dairy facility in the state.
The company produced its first cheese in June 2011, and after five months of refining their product, they brought it to the public. In October 2012, Vermont Farmstead introduced a new cheese production facility approximately 20 miles from the farm at Artisans Park in Windsor, Vermont. The company continued to grow through strategic acquisitions, purchasing Whitney's Castleton Crackers in 2013 to become the first artisanal cheese and cracker company in Vermont, and acquiring the historic Grafton Village Cheese Company in 2025, which has been making award-winning cheeses since 1892.
Vermont Farmstead Cheese Company nurtures its land and animals while embracing a spirit of community to produce fresh, quality, artisanal cheese, crackers, and local products. Through a marriage of old world recipes and innovative partnerships within their local food and beverage community, they are creating an entirely new generation of award-winning Vermont cheeses. Their mission centers on gentle care for the land and animals while making artisan cheese available to all, combining authentic cheesemaking practices with playful community collaborations.
