Walker Farm at Whortleberry Hill in New Braintree, Massachusetts, stands as the only beef producer in all of New England with both Certified 100% grass-fed and Animal Welfare Approved certifications. The farmland itself has been in the Walker family since the 1950s, though it has operated as a working farm since the 1600s. Nestled on a scenic road with sweeping vistas of fields, hills and woods, the property perfectly embodies the image of healthy soil nurturing happy, well-treated cattle.
Joan Walker, the farm's owner, became passionate about the local food movement after examining what she calls the "CRAP and additives" found in supermarket beef and being appalled by the inhumane treatment of animals in much of the beef industry. After four years of careful research into cattle types, materials, processes, and market structures, Joan and her husband Randy chose Red Devon cattle as their breed of choice. They selected Devons because they marble and taste best of all cattle on 100% grass, producing what Joan describes as a "buttery flavor," and because of their docile, naturally healthy nature.
The farm operates with an unwavering commitment to animal welfare and environmental stewardship. The cattle are never confined and always allowed free range, visible from the road at most times, and truly "allowed to be cows." This approach earned them Animal Welfare Approved certification with a perfect 100% score. Joan raises her beef much longer than most farmers, typically to nearly three years old rather than the standard 18-24 months, because she understands that the flavonoids that carry flavor in muscle and fat don't develop until that age. The farm has grown its operations to include taking over haying to provide reliable, non-GMO, non-hybrid, chemical-free feed, all sourced from fields on their road.
