Wild Fern Farm is a small, hand-scale vegetable farm that began its journey in 2021 on leased land at the historic Bakie Farm in Kingston, New Hampshire. The farm encompasses about three-quarters of an acre of cultivated land along with an additional 2,500 square feet of high tunnel space, deliberately designed to stay small, efficient, and manageable at a human scale. As part of the Bakie Farm Initiative, Wild Fern Farm shares the historic dairy farm property with two other agricultural ventures, creating a collaborative farming community that makes use of shared land, equipment, and infrastructure.
The farm was founded by Liz Willey, who grew up in Hampstead, New Hampshire, and studied environmental science at the University of New Hampshire. Her passion for farming was ignited during her service as a Peace Corps volunteer in Paraguay, where she worked in an agricultural community. After gaining experience on three different vegetable farms in New Hampshire since 2015, Liz launched Wild Fern Farm with a clear vision of how agriculture could make a positive impact.
At the heart of Wild Fern Farm's mission lies a deep commitment to soil and ecosystem health, which Liz believes leads directly to high vegetable nutrition and quality. The farm is USDA certified organic through MOFGA Certification Services and The Real Organic Project, employing practices such as compost mulching, minimal soil disturbance, cover cropping, and encouraging beneficial insects for natural pest control. Liz appreciates farming's potential to allow her to positively care for a piece of land while producing healthy, nutrient-rich vegetables for the local Seacoast region community.
