Perched high in the Litchfield Hills with sweeping views of Northwest Connecticut, Averill Farm is a living piece of American agrarian history. Purchased in 1746 from the holdings of Chief Waramaug, this tenth-generation family farm has remained in continuous operation under the stewardship of the Averill family for more than 275 years. What began as a dairy operation has since evolved into a fruit orchard and agricultural destination known for its authenticity, beauty, and abundance.
Today, Averill Farm spans over 260 acres, with 30 of those dedicated to a diverse and carefully tended apple and pear orchard. The farm grows over 100 apple varieties—many of them heirlooms—with roughly 20 types available for pick-your-own guests throughout the fall. Cider made from handpicked apples, warm apple cider donuts, and old-fashioned jams and jellies are all crafted on-site, offering visitors a taste of tradition and the quality that comes from generations of know-how. The farm also partners with nearby producers to provide an array of local goods like pies, honey, maple syrup, cheese, eggs, and more.
Tyson Averill, representing the tenth generation, now leads the operation alongside his wife Jennifer, with support from his parents, Susan and Sam. Together, they maintain the farm’s deep-rooted commitment to sustainability, community, and family heritage. Averill Farm is more than just a place to pick apples—it's a place to make memories. Whether wandering the hilltop orchard, sipping cider under an autumn sky, or selecting the perfect Christmas tree, visitors to Averill Farm are welcomed into a legacy that honors the land, the labor, and the joy of good harvests.
