Cedar Rock Gardens is a family owned plant nursery and diversified vegetable farm that sits on 13.5 acres right on Walker Creek in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Elise and Tucker Smith started the farm from the ground up in 2014, transforming land that had previously been used by the Smith family to care for animals and had sat unused for many years. Slowly and steadily they invested countless hours and all their savings to bring to life a vision set on a singular goal: to provide the community with a source for good local and seasonal food, fresh from the native soil.
The farm operates on 2.5 acres of cultivated land, utilizing crop rotation schedules and cover crops to ensure good soil practices, while maintaining about 12,000 square feet of heated greenhouse space for seedling and produce cultivation. Cedar Rock Gardens grows vegetable, herb and flower seedlings along with native perennial plants for gardeners and growers across the North Shore of Massachusetts, while also growing 1.5 acres of diverse veggie and herb crops for wholesale and retail customers. Their sustainable and organic greenhouse practices help plants thrive, and they grow the majority of their plants from seed, allowing full control over what goes into each plant from seed selection to soil composition and daily watering.
The business has evolved beyond simply farming crops to truly including the whole community in their mission. They follow organic guidelines and use only environmentally sound, organic growing techniques, fertilizers and pest controls, though they are not currently USDA Organic certified. Their approach includes employing beneficial insects like lady bugs, parasitic wasps, nematodes, praying mantis, predatory mites, and lacewings to keep plants pest-free, while using compost tea brewed on the farm to boost plant strength and combat diseases. Cedar Rock Gardens is committed to providing healthy and beautiful local options to their floral and food industry community, inviting anyone to experience the local difference.
