About the Farm

Chip-in Farm began as an immigrant's dream in 1924, when Hendrick Couvee left Holland for the United States and met his wife Thelma while working at a farm in Weston. Through the Great Depression, Hendrick supported his family of five as a milkman, while Thelma later manufactured hand grenades at the Waltham Watch Company during World War II. During this time, Hendrick purchased a victory flock of 35 chickens and sold eggs along his milk route, planting the seeds of what would become a multi-generational farming legacy.

In 1944, Hendrick, Thelma, and their son Herbert pooled their resources to "chip in" and purchase their farm in Bedford, Massachusetts, giving the operation its enduring name. For the next 35 years, Thelma managed the farm and growing flock of hens while father and son delivered eggs door-to-door throughout suburban Boston, eventually serving over 1,500 families on their route during the 1970s. The retail store opened in the 1980s when Hendrick's grandsons, Neil and Paul Couvee, took over the business and expanded beyond fresh eggs.

Today, the fourth generation of the Couvee family continues the tradition at this old-fashioned country store, offering fresh eggs from their own hens alongside sustainably raised produce and carefully selected local products. The farm embodies the values of local food production and family-run agriculture, maintaining the authentic spirit of a time when farms were the heart of their communities. Their commitment to quality and sustainability extends to partnerships with regional family-owned and small-batch businesses, creating a marketplace that celebrates New England's agricultural heritage.
