Founded in 2009 by Nancy Livensparger and her family, Fire Ring Farm has since cultivated more than just crops—it has grown into a cornerstone of community and sustainability in Portland, Connecticut. Perched on four serene acres overlooking the Connecticut River and surrounded by the Palmer Taylor Preserve, the farm honors its placement on the ancestral land of the Wangunk and Quinnipiac peoples. Embracing this heritage, the farm commits deeply to sustainable living and community engagement.
Fire Ring Farm operates as a multifaceted space: a community-supported farm, an herbalist learning hub, and a venue for meaningful events. While not USDA-certified organic, its philosophy and practices are rooted in organic standards—eschewing synthetic chemicals in favor of crop rotation, composting, cover cropping, and natural pest management. This dedication ensures that every aspect of the farm nurtures rather than depletes the environment, maintaining a harmonious relationship with the soil, water, and ecosystems upon which it depends.
With a mission centered on local impact and global awareness, Fire Ring Farm extends a warm invitation to individuals from all walks of life, providing opportunities to reconnect with the origins of their food and the earth itself. As a proud partner of Cultivating Justice, the farm supports inclusive agricultural practices by empowering underrepresented communities in Connecticut. Through education, cultivation, and community celebration, Fire Ring Farm continues to sow the seeds of a more just and regenerative food system.
