About the Farm

The Gaines Family has been farming the Guilford, Vermont countryside continuously since 1782, making theirs a truly bicentennial farm located just north of the Massachusetts line. The farm was established by David Gaines and his son Joseph, who fathered nine children and began a legacy that would span over two centuries. Joseph's son Joel, born in 1829, took over the farm as the third generation and became known as one of the most industrious and successful farmers in Guilford, earning recognition as one of the heaviest producers of maple products in the area and being universally honored for his kindly disposition and sterling integrity.

The farm passed through generations with Joel's son Edward continuing operations until his death in 1926, followed by his son Sidney who worked alongside his son Robert Sr. until Robert Sr.'s passing in 2007. Today, in its fourth century of operation, the Gaines Farm continues to change and adapt under the governance of Robert Jr., his wife Jacqueline, and their son Kyle, who maintain old traditions while introducing new and exciting venues for community involvement.

The 200-acre farm consists of open crop land, pastures, a maple sugar bush, and wooded forests, where the family grows and harvests hay and corn for feed for their cows and calves. Joel began a trend of diversification that continues today, and the current generation expresses deep appreciation for all their ancestors and current family, relatives, and great friends who are the reason for their longevity, feeling blessed with the opportunity to experience farm life.
