Hemingway Farms was established in 2002 when Chris and Amy Hemingway purchased a 90-acre property with a rich agricultural heritage. The land had been home to farming for many decades, transitioning from the Potters dairy farm in the 1950s to the Deabill's Four Seasons vegetable farm in the 1970s, and then to Peachblow Farms II ornamentals and greenhouses in the 1990s. Both Chris and Amy grew up in the farming industry, mainly dairy, and had worked in other professions as well, with Amy in environmental engineering and Chris managing cafes and bars. When the property became available, they decided to pursue their farming interests once again.
Since purchasing their farm, the Hemingways have expanded many times to create their current operation, which comprises six ornamental plant greenhouses where they grow tropical plants, succulents, annual and bedding plants, herbs and perennials for retail sale at their farmstand. They cultivate several acres of strawberries, blueberries and raspberries, as well as 20 plus acres of vegetables. Nine high tunnel greenhouses help them extend the vegetable production season, particularly for tomatoes and greens. The farm operates as a New Hampshire Farm of Distinction, offering both traditional produce and farmstand CSA programs.
At their farmstand, the Hemingways sell their own produce and plants alongside meats, cheeses, dairy and breads from nearby producers. They believe vibrant farms are a benefit to the whole community and that locally grown foods are essential for a healthy and safe food supply. The farm sells vegetables and berries through their farmstand, CSA program, and to area stores, coops, restaurants and distributors. They are fortunate to have a great farm crew, many of whom have been with them for years, helping to maintain their commitment to providing the freshest and tastiest produce to their community.
