About the Farm

Founded in 1914 by John C. and Josephine Kalenauskas, Kalenauskas Farm is a storied fifth-generation farm in Watertown, Connecticut. For much of the twentieth century, it was a working dairy operation, but in 1986, the family pivoted away from commodity milk and toward hay, beef, and livestock—laying the groundwork for a diversified, sustainable farm focused on direct-to-consumer relationships. Today, it is lovingly run by the third and fourth generations, with a fifth generation of young helpers never far from the fields or barns.

Spanning over 400 acres, Kalenauskas Farm carefully tends to more than 250 head of livestock and manages vast hay and corn silage production to feed its animals. Every detail of the farm’s operation reflects a commitment to sustainability and humane animal care—from cover cropping and reduced tillage to maximizing pasture access and ensuring animals receive nutritious, consistent feed. This reverence for land and livestock is palpable in every cut of beef and lamb, every jar of honey, every lovingly felted wool item on their market shelves.

In 2020, the family opened Kalenauskas Farm Market, a retail outpost offering 100% farm-produced goods—from USDA beef and lamb to maple syrup, handcrafted soaps, and wooden gifts. Karen’s Lambs, a beloved offshoot of the farm, showcases lamb, goats, and wool products at festivals and farmers markets across Connecticut. With deep roots and wide-ranging talents, the Kalenauskas family remains true to their guiding principle: “Do less better.” By focusing on a smaller variety of higher-quality offerings, they deliver not just food, but trust, heritage, and care in every purchase.
