In 1987, John Moriarty was searching for a house with a larger yard for his expanding garden when his real estate agent led him down an unexpected dirt road in East Lexington. At the end of that road, he discovered the ruins of the former Meek Dairy Farm. Never intending to buy a farm, he nevertheless purchased the property and wondered about bringing it back to life. That first summer, he bought an old Ford tractor and planted an acre and a half of sweet corn, beginning what would become a decades-long labor of love.
Lauren Yaffee joined John at the farm in 1995, and after receiving a calf from him for her birthday, she put aside any doubts about handling the physically demanding work of a true back-to-the-earth, no-chemical farm. Her adventure as "Momma" to all the farm animals began, and together they transformed the abandoned dairy into a thriving operation. Over the years, collapsing barns and outbuildings were replaced, berry bushes were planted, gardens were staked out, and the animals returned to breathe life back into the land.
Today, Meadow Mist Farm stands as a 6-acre family-run, chemical-free micro-farm that has grown from a single crop of sweet corn to offering over 100 seasonal products. With deep reverence for nature and the integrated ecological circle of life, they lovingly raise grass-fed beef, lamb, pastured French breed chicken, and produce cage-free fresh eggs alongside seasonal garden vegetables and berries. Their mission remains focused on providing beautiful, pesticide-free food for families to make home-cooked meals, serving as both a working farm and an integral part of the local community while preserving an unspoiled remnant of Lexington's once vital agricultural past.
