North Plain Farm and its sister farm, Blue Hill Farm, is a family operation nestled in the foothills of the Berkshires, committed to raising livestock in a rotational grass-based system that regenerates soil while respecting the welfare of both animals and the people who care for them. The farm spans a combined 300 acres in and around Great Barrington, utilizing both owned land and neighboring properties, allowing them to produce all the hay their animals require throughout the winter months.
Sean Stanton established North Plain Farm in 2001 on his family's ten acres in Great Barrington, beginning with a small chicken flock that has since grown into a highly productive, 100% grass-fed beef operation. Farm manager Phoebe Scott-Lawson joined in 2011, initially milking a few mornings a week before discovering her true passion for farming. She worked her way up to Assistant Farm Manager through hands-on learning and mentorship from Sean, left in 2021 to gain additional experience in pasture management and intensive rotational grazing, then returned in 2024 to help guide the farm's next chapter.
The farm operates under a philosophy of honoring their animals through low-stress methods, teaching cows to come when called rather than forcing movement through fear. Their intensive rotational grazing ensures bovine herds always have access to the best grass while allowing adequate regrowth time. With an open farm policy that welcomes visitors year-round, North Plain Farm strives to bring nutrient-dense, traceable food to their neighbors while maintaining precious farmland as open space in their community.
