Pangea Shellfish Company emerged from the vision of Ben Lloyd, who spent four years growing oysters in Rhode Island and working in Boston's wholesale seafood business before founding the company in September 2001, just one week after 9/11. What began as a one-person operation with a small truck and building has evolved into Boston's premier shellfish wholesaler, with Lloyd's wife Victoria initially helping with paperwork at night and the first employee, Dan Light, joining in 2003 and eventually becoming Vice President.
The company's mission centers on sourcing, growing and distributing the finest oysters and shellfish in the world while maintaining respect for oceans, customers, vendors and employees. Operating from a 10,000-square-foot HAACP-compliant facility in Boston's Seaport District, Pangea has built a reputation for carrying the largest oyster assortment on the East Coast and distributing shellfish across the US and Canada to foodservice distributors and establishments. Their state-of-the-art wet-storage system, one of only five permitted in Massachusetts, uses nutrient-rich seawater from Duxbury Bay with five different filtration methods to ensure purity.
Pangea's competitive advantage stems from their ownership of two oyster farms acquired in 2010 and 2016, giving them intimate knowledge of oysters from start to finish. The Standish Shore Oyster Farm in Duxbury Bay grows over four million oysters annually, while the Blish Point Oyster Farm in Barnstable Harbor produces cocktail and select-size oysters. Their business philosophy emphasizes selling only the freshest, highest-quality shellfish while providing exceptional customer service, protecting their customers' territories, supporting their vendors and growers, and treating their employees as family.
