Small Farm is a certified organic three-acre operation nestled in Stow, Massachusetts, where farmer-owners Elena Colman and Karl Goethert have cultivated both crops and community since their journey began. Elena discovered her calling in 2006 at Brigham Farm in Concord, inspired by her sister's dirt-covered enthusiasm, while Karl's path started during a high school summer job at a local farm. Their diverse backgrounds, spanning from Elena's appreciation for farming's physical and mental challenges to Karl's adventures across continents studying animation and working with bees in Uganda, converged into a shared passion for small-scale agriculture.
In 2019, the couple married in their own flower field surrounded by family and friends, symbolizing their deep connection to the land they steward. Three years later, they achieved a milestone by purchasing the farmland outright in 2022, securing their mission for the long term. The property, preserved for conservation in perpetuity through collaboration with the town of Stow and the Stow Conservation Trust, encompasses twenty acres of thoughtfully managed land that serves as both working farm and biodiverse habitat.
The farm's mission extends far beyond simple food production, aiming to increase seasonal availability of fresh produce while creating excitement around healthy eating in their community. Elena and Karl, supported by their dedicated staff including retail manager Kayla, field and compost manager Adam, and greenhouse and wash/pack manager Carmella, operate with the conviction that small-scale farms are essential components of a resilient food system. Their four-season operation offers produce through CSA programs, farm stand sales, and wholesale channels, while their pick-your-own flower garden and public trails invite visitors to experience working agriculture firsthand and celebrate the property's biological diversity.
