Orchard
Sunrise Orchards is a family-owned apple orchard in Cornwall, Vermont, in the beautiful Champlain Valley. The orchard was originally planted by Barney Hodges Sr. in 1970, and today is run by his son Chris (Barney Jr.) and his wife Christiana. The couple met in 1989 while studying ocean biology aboard a brigantine out of Woods Hole, Massachusetts, and after trying careers in geology and teaching, followed their hearts back to the family farm over 25 years ago.
The orchard spans approximately 200 acres with around 60,000 trees producing 14 diverse apple varieties, from well-known favorites to unique heirloom species. Sunrise Orchards is part of the Eco-Apple program and is third-party certified by the IPM Institute of North America. The farm has been powered by its own solar farm since 2016. The farm market offers baked goods including cider donuts, apple turnovers, and pies from their on-site bakery, plus fresh sweet apple cider, their sparkling apple juice "First Light," Vermont-made gifts, and specialty foods. Pick-your-own is available daily during season, with views of the Adirondacks and paths through adjacent fields.
