Tillie's Farm in South Peabody has been growing community since 1940, when Marian Newhall -- better known by her nickname Tillie -- decided to offer locally grown produce to her neighbors. Her family already had an established wholesale fruit and vegetable business, but Tillie wanted something more personal. The 13-acre farm and farmstand became a beloved neighborhood fixture for decades. Earl Spurr, Tillie's son, operated the farm for over four decades before retiring in 2017, at which point the City of Peabody took over operations, making Peabody unique in Massachusetts as the only municipality with two city-owned working farms (Tillie's and Brooksby Farm). Today the farm is managed by Billy Murphy under the Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestry. Tillie's sells locally grown produce, flowers, pumpkins, eggs, baked goods, apple cider, Christmas trees, wreaths, and local corn on the cob. Greenhouses allow for an array of annuals, perennials, hanging baskets, and cemetery arrangements throughout the spring and summer seasons.
