Nestled halfway up a hill in Rochester, Vermont, Uphill Farm represents the culmination of decades of gardening passion shared by Paula and Kevin Dougherty. For years, farming had been a beloved sideline while they maintained regular jobs to pay the bills, but eight years ago they decided to take their agricultural pursuits up a notch. With over 80 combined years of experience between them, they continue to learn something new each growing season while having tremendous fun sharing their knowledge and bounty with their community.
The farm sits at 1,100 feet elevation at 43.8746 latitude in the heart of Vermont's Green Mountains, where the shorter growing season is offset by an abundance of rocks that, as the Doughertys joke, surely must hold heat. Their commitment to organic practices runs deep, with some of their ground having been managed organically for 42 years. Thirty-eight years of careful soil building through manure, compost, and mulch incorporation, combined with their steadfast refusal to use synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides, reflects their core philosophy of growing sustainably with respect for the land.
Uphill Farm specializes in vegetables, berries, flowers, herbs, and plant starts, employing season extenders like low tunnels and high tunnels to maximize their growing season and provide the earliest, highest quality produce to local markets. While they use powered machines for heavy work, most planting and cultivation is done by hand with traditional tools including wheelhoes. Their mission centers on growing quality produce at reasonable prices for both customers and themselves, believing firmly that good food should be accessible to everybody. They supply local establishments including Maple Soul, Liberty Hill Farm and Inn, and Village Grocery, while also offering a flexible choice CSA program and maintaining an online store for convenient farm pickup orders.
